The project

The app is designed to be the primary resource for farmers and consultants when deciding if and when crops need treatment. A key focus is the processing and visualization of complex data, as well as the provision of localized information. To ensure users can navigate quickly and efficiently, the app is intended to become an essential daily tool for planning field activities.

About isip

isip is digitizing agriculture with an app that helps farmers and consultants optimize cultivation processes and make informed decisions. To this end, isip provides forecasting models, monitoring data, and plant protection recommendations for various field crops.

The challenge

Complex navigation

The navigation, which had grown organically over the years, made it difficult for users to find their way around and achieve their goals—especially within their own profiles, where they were supposed to enter and review data.

Low Active Usage

Due to opaque navigation and a lack of guidance, active usage remained low: very few users entered their own data, even though this was intended to be a core function of the application alongside viewing actionable recommendations.

Complex Data Visualization

The data had to be presented in a way that allowed users to read it quickly and take action—not just in the office, but directly out in the field.

Our Approach

For technical reasons, we divided the project into two areas: improving data visualization and optimizing user navigation and engagement within the application.

Step 1

Data Visualization & UI Design

We started by rebuilding the design system to make collaboration with the development team as effective and seamless as possible. This also served as the foundation for visualizing highly complex data across a wide variety of charts. Everything had to be accessible and responsive so that farmers could evaluate their next steps in any situation.

Step 2

Navigation & Activation

By clearly separating the navigation between the website and the login area, we were able to resolve significant orientation issues. Methods like tree testing and traditional sitemaps helped us develop an ideal solution for the sub-navigation and improve internal linking. This allowed users to reach their goals quickly. Small motivational elements, illustrations, and simplified forms further brought the application to life.

Step 3

Prototyping & Testing

Before moving into development, we tested the key user journeys to ensure they were clear and intuitive for real users. Once testing was successful, we handed everything over for final development.

Step 1

Research & JTBD Interviews

The interviews gave us a deep understanding of user needs: patients require clear goals to stay motivated and actively integrate the app into their daily lives. Therapists, on the other hand, need more support and a personalized onboarding process to use the app effectively. This approach specifically strengthens the collaboration between both groups.

Step 2

Strategic Realignment: Product-Led Pricing Model

We developed a freemium model that is visible and intuitive for therapists at every relevant touchpoint. Feature segmentation was clearly structured: the free trial focuses on a few core functions, while the previously opaque "sandbox" has been removed.

Step 3

Gamification & User Onboarding

A redesign featuring a mascot, checklists, and videos simplifies the onboarding process for patients and therapists alike. Subtle gamification elements, such as progress bars and achievements, boost engagement without compromising medical professionalism.

Solution

Close cross-team collaboration and clearly defined project phases allowed us to make rapid progress and build upon that foundation to implement more profound improvements.

Result

An application that is highly usable for both user groups—whether on the go in the sun or at the office. Consequently, activation improved significantly, as evidenced by an increase in data entry.

“Working together was a pleasant and trusting experience. Even during difficult discussions, they maintained a clear overview and a professional perspective. This was particularly helpful for our internal deliberations. Thank you for the fantastic, goal-oriented collaboration!”
